Weather
Slovakia enjoys four seasons with hot summers and cool winters. Throughout the year there are festivals and holidays, so you are welcome to visit Bratislava anytime (just be sure to pack the right type of clothing!)
Summer
Summer is the best time to come to Bratislava as the weather is warm and most outdoor events Viva Musica and the Bratislava’s Summer of Culture takes place during the months of June and July. During July, the average temperature is between 23° – 28°Celsius. It can get extremely hot in the beginning and middle of July, as Bratislava experiences a heat wave where the temperature high is between 30°- 35° Celsius.
August is a very hot month with temperatures reaching up to 35° Celsius during the day. But at times, the city experiences heavy rainfall and thunder storms causing temperatures to drop down to 16° – 25° Celsius. So it is best to dress in summer clothes, but definitely have an umbrella and rain jacket just in case it starts to rain.
September is a great time to come to Bratislava as most of the big crowds of tourists will be gone leaving more breathing room in the Old Town. Average temperatures during the day are 21° – 25° Celsius, and you can still wear your summer clothes. September is also a great time for visiting because the high season is over and prices of accommodation are back to its usual rate.
Fall
As fall approaches, it becomes cooler and the chances of rainfall and overcast rise significantly. If you decide to visit Bratislava in October or November, be sure to pack good sweaters and a jacket. While a sunny morning day can be a bit chilly, the average temperatures in the beginning of October are between 14° -18° Celsius. Near the end of October the temperature gets a bit cooler as the average high reaches 10° – 12° Celsius. The nights tend to be much cooler as the average low reaches 4 ° Celsius, so don’t forget to bring a warm jacket if you’re planning to stay out for the night. Also, rainfall can suddenly come so either pack a compact umbrella or be prepared to buy one on the street for
€2.00 – €4.00.
Winter
Winter is in full effect by December as the snow falls and temperatures reach below 0° Celsius. Don’t forget to pack a hat, gloves, and scarves as they will come in handy during the winter months. But by far, January is Bratislava’s coldest month as average day temperatures are 3°Celsius and at night fall below -2° to -5°Celsius (For a Canadian this winter is a blessing!)
February is often a wet and cold month, as it rains and snows periodically, with temperatures reaching a day time high of 6°Celsius. So be sure to pack an umbrella, snow boots and a good winter jacket.
Spring
March madness happens in Bratislava when heavy rainfall and overcast seems to be the common weather for weeks. So remember to have an umbrella or rain jacket. But the weather does improve by April as temperatures reach between 11° – 16° Celsius and sunny days start to appear. By May, the spring showers start to disappear and the temperature reaches at a warm 21°Celsius. You can definitely pack your t-shirts, dresses, and long-sleeved shirts during this time. May is a good time to visit Bratislava as the weather is great, more people are out on the town, and accommodation is at its average rate.
A tip: Summer is the high season. The months of May, September, and October are good months to visit Bratislava to avoid the crowds.
The end of November and December is the high season during winter. The months of January and February are at its low season. March and April is a great time to visit (if you don’t mind the rainfall).
